The Third Annual Gobeshona Conference was held from January 08 to 11 January 2017 with more than 200 participants attending every day. The topic of the third day of the conference was on “Urbanization and Development Control” hosted by Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (RAJUK) and co-hosted by ACCCRN-ICCCAD Bangladesh. The session was chaired by Sarder Shafiqul Alam, Country Coordinator, ACCCRN-ICCCAD in Bangladesh and Coordinator, Urban Climate Change Programme at ICCCAD. The moderator of the session was Mr. Kamrul Hasan Shohag, Deputy Town Planner, RAJUK.

Two presenters presented on their research findings. Mst. Gulajannath Prianka Choudhury presented her slide on the topic of “Urbanization and Climate Change: Urbanization Strategies of Baluchar Induced Climate Change” where she argued that unplanned urbanization was the main cause of negative environmental impacts at the study area,suggesting the government should emphasize rural development in their policies.

Neaz Rassel gave a presentation on “Building Climate Resilience to Noapara Town: A Coastal Urban Centre of Bangladesh” where he identified the impacts of climatic disasters in the studied municipality, and proposed an action plan.

After the presentations, the floor was opened to the audience for comments, questions and general discussion. The panelists answered questions on building urban centres in climatic disasters affected coastal region in Bangladesh, and what is further needed to be done to reduce migrants in the large cities like Dhaka, Chittagong and others.

The discussion also highlighted the need to create more job opportunities in secondary cities and small towns, and means to achieve Goal 11 of SDG by 2030, which looks at ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’. The chair of the session further shared that ACCCRN-ICCCAD has already organized a three day conference on ‘The First Annual Conference on Urban Resilience’ which was held from 17th to 19th December 2016.

ACCCRN-ICCCAD has made a pledge to organize ‘The Second Annual Conference on Urban Resilience’, which will be held in November 2017.
