The 4th Gobeshona Annual Conference for Research on Climate Change in Bangladesh will be held from 8-11 January 2018. The brand of this conference is “Gobeshona4″. The whole conference is divided into 3 sections: (1) Local Solutions (2) Science Policy Dialogues and (3) Communicating Research. First, three days of the conference are allocated for the researchers to present their findings. This year we are looking for research based solutions on the local vulnerabilities in Bangladesh.

Building Local Climate Knowledge

The geographic features of Bangladesh highly demand local area study to adapt with the changing world. Immense amount of water is funneled from the world highest and wettest mountain ranges of Himalayas and Meghalaya, flowing over this powerful riverine floodplain to the Bay of Bengal. These features influence the internal Rivers, Haors, Barind areas, Hill tracts, Forest and Coastal zones with interrelation.

The impacts of Climate Change are different in these vulnerable regions and so are the adaptation technologies. Gobeshona4 is looking for scientific solutions to move Bangladesh forward. To obtain maximum research findings on these exposed areas, the central theme of Gobeshona4 is “Building Local Climate Knowledge”.

Plenary and Parallel Sessions

All the plenary sessions of this conference will be on special local features – Barind, Floodplain and Haors, Hills and Forests, Coastal and Cities. The parallel sessions will highlight important thematic areas like Adaptation Technologies, Food Security, Health, Loss and Damage, Gender, Ecosystem Resilience, Resilience Livelihood, Migration Opportunities, Modelling, Disaster Management, Mitigation, Natural Resource Management and Renewable Energy.

Science Policy Dialogues

The 4th day is the Science Policy Dialogue day. The world prominent climate scientist, Dr. Saleemul Huq is designing the sessions reflecting his extensive experience on global climate negotiations and mainstreaming climate change in the national policies and actions. So far, we have SDG13, Climate Finance, Green Growth and Deltas. After the Science Policy Dialogue, we will have the Concluding Session of the Conference.

Communicating Research

The additional day of the conference (day 5) will be dedicated to Communicating Climate Research. Media and communication organizations are the main participants of this day to highlight effective ways to communicate climate change research.

New Video Session

This time we have a separate call for video abstracts asking from Bangladeshi and Foreign Research and Practicing organizations to submit their videos on important climate change issues in Bangladesh. We are organizing full video sessions with short videos facilitated discussion sessions.

Each year foreign delegates join Gobeshona conferences to know how Bangladesh is adapting to the adverse impacts of climate change. We have international keynotes, international presenters, LDC representatives and Bangladeshi climate change academics and experts living abroad as participants of the conference. Gobeshona4 is an excellent opportunity for networking with policymakers, government and non-government representatives, donour agencies, international organizations who gather to learn the latest research on climate change in Bangladesh.
