The Paris Agreement: what does it mean for climate change resilience building measures?

Last December, I had the privilege of supporting the Indonesia Delegation at the COP 21 UNFCCC in Paris. With my background work with ACCCRN, I was assigned to cover the issues of Adaptation and Loss and Damage. The COP 21 has successfully given rise to the Paris Agreement, which will provide an overarching policy framework for post-2020 global climate change action, and thus will be relevant to our work on climate change resilience building measures.
 

Gender equality at COP21

After a year working intensively in one of our campaigns promoting inclusive Urban Climate Change Resilience (UCCR) in Indonesia, Mercy Corps Indonesia together with the Indonesian Municipalities Association (APEKSI), the Center for Regional Research and Information (PATTIRO), and the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection (KPPPA) has succeeded in developing a national guideline for integrating gender with Climate Change Adaptation. This guideline provides information that enables government agencies to understand the importance and direction of integrating gender and to apply gender equality and social inclusion approach into Urban Climate Change Resilience programs.


COP21: Historic agreement reached, but the hard work begins now

Cheers echoed around the halls of the La Bourget conference centre in Paris as the gavel came down to signal that an agreement had been reached. The news rippled out amongst tired delegates, many of whom had only managed a few hours sleep over the last days of the negotiations. The sound of applause - unfamiliar at most UN climate talks - provided a backdrop to whooping and the tired tears. In the coming days there will be much written about the imperfections of the deal, of which there are many. However the significance of the achievement in Paris should not be underestimated.


The Climate Vulnerable Forum has come of age

The Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) just held its high officials' meeting in Manila under the chairmanship of the government of the Philippines where they prepared the Manila Paris Declaration to be formally adopted at a heads of government meeting of the CVF countries in Paris on November 30. They also agreed on a Road Map for activities from 2016 to 2018.


The SDGs: a view from the Asia Pacific Urban Forum in Jakarta

The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations General Assembly set in motion a tremendously complex and wide-ranging set of processes that will stretch human ingenuity to its limits. The SDGs outline a comprehensive global agenda and set ambitious social, environmental, political and environmental targets. They are the culmination of a lengthy consultative process that involved innumerable governmental and non-state organisations, and many of those same organisations are now developing strategies for achieving the SDGs.
