The Urgency to Unearth Creative Ways to Finance Resilience

A report released by the World Bank in 2016 stated that, each year, urban areas are growing by an average of more than 75 million people – which is a number greater than the population of the world’s 85 smallest countries combined. However, cities and urban dwellers have received too little attention in discussions about climate change impacts and adaptation, especially in relation to financing. It is apparent that the current levels of international funding are insufficient to meet current and future adaptation needs.

Lubaina is a Managing Associate with the Climate Resilience Practice and WRI India based in Mumbai office. She is currently leading urban resilience work for the WRI India’s Sustainable Cities program, focusing on livelihood protection as a means to build resilience in poor and vulnerable communities. Her current project focuses on the simultaneous impacts of climate change and urbanization on the livelihoods of coastal peri-urban communities living on the outskirts of Mumbai.

MEMBER INTERVIEW: FATHIMATH AFIYA, Maldives

Fathimath Afiya is chairperson of the Maldivian Network for Empowering Women (MNEW), which was established as an informal network during the Action Aid International (AAI) work in the aftermath of the tsunami in 2005, thereafter registered officially in 2012. She was involved in the Tsunami Management Team of AAI’s Rehabilitation in 2014 that was focusing on providing assistance to women.

MEMBER INTERVIEW: AHMAD BAIHAQI, Indonesia

Ahmad Baihaqi is a young role model to many of his peers. Abay, as people usually call him, is very active with the Biodiversity Warriors community from Kehati Foundation in Jakarta, Indonesia. Abay is very passionate about promoting the importance of biodiversity, especially in Jakarta, an urban area. He admitted that it is not easy since biodiversity is not a popular topic and many young people have many other interests. This July, ACCCRN interviewed him about his role and activity in the Biodiversity Warriors community.

MEMBER INTERVIEW: HASEEB MD. IRFANULLAH, Bangladesh

Haseeb is currently working for IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) as the Programme Coordinator of Bangladesh Country Office in Dhaka. Recently, he wrote a chapter for a book entitled Climate Change in the Bay of Bengal Region: Exploring Sectoral Cooperation for Sustainable Development. In the Bangladesh Chapter, Haseeb wrote ‘What Does Bangladesh Tell Us about Innovation in Climate Change Adaptation’. This June, ACCCRN interviewed him on the topic of innovation in climate change adaptation.
