Sunandan went on to study for a Master’s degree in Ecology from Salim Ali School of Ecology at Pondicherry University. He has applied his knowledge of ecology and development to a wide range of sectors including, water resource management, sanitation, forestry, renewable energy, environmental services and of course, climate change adaptation.

Sumbawa Besar is the capital of the Indonesian island of Sumbawa. The word “besar” means ‘capital’ but also forms the basis for the island’s slogan: “Bersih, Elok, Sehat, Aman dan, Rapi” or “clean, beautiful, healthy, safe, and proper”.

When Elly Tartati Ratni, speaks of her home town, it is clear that this five-word description is apt. Elly recalls the coastal town as a beautiful to grow up in. She speaks of her childhood there with great fondness, especially her years as a girl scout.

Sasank’s commitment to urban resilience stems from his childhood. Since he was a small boy he has been aware of the differences between one part of the world and another. “I remember living in the US and returning to India and being struck by the difference between the lives of the people around my U.S family and those people around my Indian family,” he said. “Since then I’ve been working to find ways of making those differences less stark.”


ACCCRN Champion: Dr Saleemul Huq, Dhaka, Bangladesh

By the time Saleemul Huq had reached university he had lived in more cities than most people manage in a lifetime. Born in Karachi Pakistan, his father was a diplomat moving frequently, and Saleemul moved with him. At the age of one he moved to Bonn Germany, he went to school in Jakarta, Indonesia; attended high school in Nairobi, Kenya; and then went to university in London. Later he would settle in Dhaka, Bangladesh where he still lives for much of the year.
