The COP21 agreement in Paris confirms the nations’ commitments to lowering their carbon emissions and reducing the exponential increase in global temperatures[1]. Its resounding approval does indicate the world's ambition to achieve these commitments to lower levels, and to work together in protecting the planet from the effects of climate change. This spirit of collaboration and cooperation signals the nations’ determination to fight the impacts of climate change.


Prioritising urban resilience agenda at COP 21

India is gearing up for the COP 21 to be held next month. Recently, we submitted to the UN climate secretariat a detailed plan to cut carbon emissions. Around 150 countries representing about 90% of the world’s carbon emissions have now filed pledges to curb them and, in so doing, dramatically increasing the chances of a deal at the Paris climate summit in December (Guardian, October 2015). The role of cities has become very important in minimising these carbon emissions, largely due to their critical position as emitters, as well as their capacity to implement solutions for a cleaner environment.

Sizzling heat has lately affected people's life considerably in India, exposing them to severe temperatures and public health risks. This continuous heat wave so far has killed more than 2,300 people through June 2015 this year. Heat waves in India are an annual recurring phenomenon with extreme events striking in 1998, 2002, 2003 2010 and most recently in June this year (2015).
